The large follower, which counts for two followers, is also intriguing since it presents you with a chance to steal your opponents points by taking over their cities, farms, or roads. But Carcassonne is already a great game, surely this is just going to make things needlessly complicated?

For me, the extra tiles make the game just slightly longer which, for once, I actually like and they add additional variety and strategy for a very low overhead. I completely agree with you there. On your next turn, if you can add to your city or road, you get an extra turn immediately for a maximum of two turns. But you can also use it as a weapon against your opponent by placing it in one of his cities, thus making it a bit harder especially toward the end of the game to complete the city and denying him any points for that city if he does not complete it.

The most significant impact this expansion has is it gives players a strong incentive to complete other players’ features cities, roads, cloisters –Whenever you play a tile that grants points to another player, you have the option of putting a follower in the big city “Carcassonne” properwhich can then be brought in as a sort of reinforcement to earn you points on another feature later.

This is probably good if you’re playing with beginners; as a Carcassonne veteran I can’t say I would really miss it. It adds that one additional player bringing up the player count to six max.

Personally I like the new tweaks added by the presence of cathedral and inn tiles. There are of course some additions to the game mechanics too. Carcassonne is still a great 6 player game, although do consider playing with some extra tiles.

At the end of the game, when there are no tiles remaining, all incomplete features are scored. After a player drafts a tile, move the remaining tiles forward and add a new tile to the back of the line.

Inns and Cathedrals adds more player interaction and increases the values of your roads and cities if they are completed. There is no break, so we play it that way.

carcassobne On each turn a player draws a new terrain tile and places it adjacent to tiles that are already face up.
