The large follower, which counts for two followers, is also intriguing since it presents you with a chance to steal your opponents points by taking over their cities, farms, or roads. But Carcassonne is already a great game, surely this is just going to make things needlessly complicated?

For me, the extra tiles make the game just slightly longer which, for once, I actually like and they add additional variety and strategy for a very low overhead. I completely agree with you there. If one cathedral is added to a city, each city tile is worth three points; if two cathedrals are added, each city tile is worth four points. One other thing to consider is are there ANY road tiles that are straight that end in the middle?

Actually, looking through pictures, the new version doesn’t look that good compared to the old. The third edition removes these exceptions and brings field scoring in line with the scoring of other features.


Finally, the “joker” card, or Abbey tile, I feel is a cheap “get out of jail” card for the player, and invalidates some of your strategy if you like blocking your opponents while you work on your own objectives. On your next turn, if you can add to your city or road, you get an extra turn immediately for a maximum of two turns. But you can also use it as a weapon against your opponent by placing it in one of his cities, thus making it a bit harder especially toward the end of the game to complete the city and denying him any points for that city if he does not complete it.

Personally I like the new tweaks added by the presence of cathedral and inn tiles. There are of course some additions to the game mechanics too. Carcassonne is still a great 6 player game, although do consider playing with some extra tiles.

At the end of the game, when there are no tiles remaining, all incomplete features are scored. After a player drafts a tile, move the remaining tiles forward and add a new tile to the back of the line.
